How to Plan the Perfect Welsh Adventure

If you’ve ever dreamed of an adventure that is characterised by misty mountains, cosy pubs, and people who are warmer than your favourite aunt, and just as willing to feed you, then you will find that a trip to Wales is exactly what you need.

Wales is often overlooked as a proper travel destination, but you can easily spend a week or two there without getting bored, and actually, you will find that your sense of adventure is more than adequately fooled by what’s on offer in the Welsh valleys, foothills and quaint coastal towns.

If that sounds good to you, here’s how to plan the perfect Welsh adventure.

1.Start with the Great Outdoors

Wales is basically one big adventure playground with some of the most stunning mountains, rivers and beaches in the whole of the UK, maybe even the world, in some cases. So, it makes sense to plan your Welsh adventure with the great outdoors in mind. Snowdonia (now officially Eryri) is the headline act with its rugged peaks, glassy lakes, and enough hiking trails to keep you busy for weeks. You can take the scenic route up Mount Snowdon by train, or earn your bragging rights with a hike to the summit. Either way, the views are absolutely worth the sweat.

If you’re after something a little more low-key but equally stunning, head to the Brecon Beacons (Bannau Brycheiniog). The waterfalls here are straight out of a storybook. Think hidden forest pools and mossy glens that make you want to pack a picnic and stay forever.

2.Get on the Water

Welsh waterways are also a thing to behold and a source of much beauty and adventure, so once you’ve had your fill of the mountains, you are going to want to get out on the water too. For something truly unique, try the Llangollen Aqueduct Canoe Tour. You’ll paddle across the famous Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, floating high above the River Dee in a canoe (yes, on a bridge of water!). It’s a mix of heart-pounding excitement and jaw-dropping beauty – the kind of adventure that’ll make your Instagram followers jealous for months.

If you prefer coastal vibes, rent a kayak around Pembrokeshire’s rugged cliffs or spot dolphins off Cardigan Bay. And for something slower? Try a canal boat holiday, think of it as glamping, but afloat.

3.Dive into Welch Culture

You can’t go to Wales and skip the castles. There are more than 600 of them that run the gamut from owning fortresses like Caernarfon to ivy-covered ruins that look plucked from a fairy tale. Oh, and don’t skip Conwy which is a beautifully preserved medieval town with walls you can actually walk on.

Apart from the history, there’s music (pop into a cosy pub for traditional folk music), dance (time your visit for a local), and interesting locals to be found.

4.Taste Your Way Through Wales

Welsh cuisine is hearty, comforting, and surprisingly inventive. Try a traditional cawl (a rich lamb stew), bara brith (fruit bread), or fresh seafood along the coast. Oh, and if someone offers you Welsh cakes, say yes. Always yes.

Here’s to a Welsh adventure you’ll never forget!
